- Description The Stonington Historical Society will present James T. Carlton and his illustrated
program, "Blue Water Immigrants: The Maritime History of Marine Biology” at the La Grua
Center, Stonington, on Wednesday, January 14 at 6 pm. In this highly visual presentation, Dr
Carlton traces the migration of marine species carried on ships from the Age of Exploration to
the present day. The program is free and open to all.
For centuries, ships have been sailing to every part of the world carrying in their holds and on
their hulls thousands of species of marine animals and plants, profoundly altering the
distribution of marine life -- and, in turn, impacting native communities on nearly every
coastline on earth. In modern times, ships' ballast water added to the global dispersal of exotic
species, leading to international management and control efforts to reduce future invasions. In
this illustrated talk on Blue Water Immigrants, Dr Carlton will discuss the deep and often
overlooked inter-relationships between maritime history and marine biology.
