- Description To all the patriotic inhabitants of Southeastern Connecticut! The Stonington Historical Society invites you to a celebratory display of loyalty, patriotism, and pride. In homage to the leaders of the American Revolution and the drafters of the Declaration of Independence on Monday, July 4, 2016 at 10 am at Wadawanuck Square, local community members will lead a parade of the most esteemed participants - southerly to Cannon Square and then back to Wadawanuck Square. This year’s Honorary Parade Marshall is Retired Submariner William Breed in honor of the 100th Anniversary of the US Naval Submarine Base in Groton, CT. William Lee Breed’s naval career began when he was selected for the Regular Naval ROTC program and attended the University of Louisville, graduating in 1957 with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering. Upon completion of nuclear training and submarine school, Bill served on US TRITON (SSN 586) as Operations Officer and on the USS THOMAS JEFFERSON (SSBN 618) as Executive Officer. Later, after a two-year tour at the US Naval Academy as an instructor for Naval Engineering and basic thermodynamics, he was assigned to the Operational Test and Evaluation Force, stationed in Norfolk, VA. After 22 years of service, Bill retired at the rank of Commander. Bill is a resident of Pawcatuck and he and his wife Scotty Breed are very active volunteers for the Stonington Historical Society.
